Guidelines for Use of Curriculum Continuums

Curriculum continuums have been developed in reading and writing. Additional continuums in other curriculum areas will be added over time.

The purpose of the continuums is to provide teachers with an understanding of progressions of learning. The development of curriculum continuums has been important to ensure a ‘Pathway” of learning is consistently implemented in all schools in Tamaki.

The continuums can be used to support assessment and planning. The continuums do not break down key concepts into learning intentions and success criteria. Rather they provide a framework for teachers to develop learning intentions and success criteria with students.

Language of the Continuums

The continuums are written in such a way as to ensure key concepts are identified and developed over time. To learn a key concept will progress through three levels:

 Attempts to:

  • Begins to
  • Is able to

The example below illustrates how these stages are recorded on the continuum.

Example – Use of Fullstops

When children first experiment with putting fullstops in their writing this is described as ‘attempts to’. Children working at this level may put fullstops at the end of every line or randomly throughout their writing. They are aware of fullstops but not yet using them correctly. As children become more proficient at using fullstops they may have them correctly placed some of the time but not consistently. This is described as ‘begins to’. Once children have control of the use of fullstops this is described ‘ is able to’. That is children are using fullstops correctly all of the time.
